New Treads
I’d been thinking about selling my 7.5 FX and getting one of the new Gary Fisher “dual sports” (so-called for their being decent at everything and good for nothing). I wanted the Montare because it has front suspension and dual disc brakes. Due the nature of traffic on Broad and Moreland its just not feasible to ride on the street. People will literally try to run you over. The sidewalks around here aren’t very well kept so they’re full of very large cracks and ruts that aren’t suitable for my hybrid FX with slightly textured road tires and carbon fork. But before dropping a grand on the Montare and trying to sell the FX on craigslist, I thought I’d try getting a bigger tire. Something I that might absorb the cracks a little better and not slip when I have to hit the grass in the park and Armstrong it up hill. I got more of a cyclocross tire with a half-way decent knobby tread and what a difference it makes! I love the bike again!
The mechanic at the bike shop also told me about Simple Green. I had tried a few degreasers before and they were all messy. Simple Green makes the bike look new!
Here it is without the new tires while I clean the wheels and components.
Here Quality Assurance is inspecting my work. Those tires look ready for the dirt.
I’ll miss the original red but otherwise very happy with the new tires. I cruised over to the gym with them. There’s a bit more rolling resistance and they make a cool humming sound but they’re great at absorbing the bumps and eating grass.
