Dakar Toolkit and Parts
Awhile back I found an excellent series of videos on Youtube that covers most of what one needs for the F650GS specifically. The first of the videos is embedded below:
The second part can be found here, though unless you have an F650GS its probably not that interesting. This guy does a really thorough job of going through his tools and parts. I've gone through the two videos (not sure where parts 3 and 4 are) and created the list below:
Parts to get:
Chain Guide (TT)
Chain Tension Plates (TT)
Brake cylinder guard (TT)
Extras to carry onboard:
Throttle cable
Clutch cable
Tire lever (and this)
RUGlide (tire lubricant for tire removal)
Leatherman
Front and rear tire tubes
Tire patch kit (in case backup tube fails)
Turn signal bulbs
Locktite
Clutch fork
Mirror clamp bolts (I know a bit about these)
Master link for chain
Chain clip?
Subframe bolts
Clutch lever
Brake lever
Waterpump kit
Front Tire Replacement:
8mm, T45, ratchet, 12mm wrench
Rear Tire Replacement:
19mm, T40, 13mm, ratchet w/ extension
Other:
6mm, 5mm allen wrenches, socket versions for leverage w/ ratchet.
T30 (engine bolts)

10mm
BMW Toolkit (2001):
T25, T30, T40, T45 wrenches
8, 10, 19, 14, 24mm wrenches
dualhead screwdriver
Other toolkit (extra stuff):
10mm - 19mm wrenches
mini-ratchet with extension
Other general:
T20, T25, T30, 5mm allen, 6mm allen, philips head screwdriver, 13mm, 10mm socket, 18mm sparkplug socket. Small vice grips, needlenose pliers, wire clippers, adjustable wrench. Multimeter. Electrical tape. First aid kit. Gloves. Zip ties. Flashlight. Tire pressure gauge.
Don also mentioned that he carries velcro straps on his bike. That or a few bungee cords is probably a good idea.
Apart from this list, my original reminder email had the following:
Complete an ECI (Emergency Contact Information) card
- Use an SD memory card case with a small printout of the most
important emergency information.
- One the face of the case include blood type, date of birth,
any allergies or medications, two contact names, and an emergency
phone number (and MedJet member ID and phone number).
- Use the SD card itself to store other relevant medical documents
(insurance, medical records, etc). Also, use this card to store copies
of important documents when out of country or on long trips.
Look into BMW MOA and MedJet membership.
MOA members get MedJet discounts and access to contact information of other MOA members around the country (The Black Book). MedJet can be used to jet you
back home in the event of an emergency a long way from home (and US-grade medical care).
motorcycle maintenance book from Borders/Amazon.
I already got a copy of the manual from Jon at BMW Of Atlanta. The other items I still need to do. A year of MedJet at $250 sounds like a good deal for trips like Nicaragua. At around $50/year the BMW MOA membership is a steal.
